California’s Grapevine to add CRCP

Project Overview

Traveling northbound on Interstate 5 through the Grapevine, drivers have long experienced the wear and tear of one of California’s most heavily traveled corridors. Years of intense truck traffic, steep grades, and environmental exposure have left the pavement visibly distressed / patched, cracked, and uneven, as seen in the existing roadway conditions above.

Caltrans is set to change that in a big way.

This project will fully reconstruct a key segment of I-5 in Kern County, replacing aging pavement with continuously reinforced concrete pavement (CRCP), a long-lasting, high-performance solution designed specifically for demanding highway environments like the Grapevine.

The Transformation

The most immediate improvement drivers will notice is a smoother, more consistent ride. CRCP eliminates most transverse joints, creating a continuous surface that significantly reduces bumps, vibration, and surface irregularities. The result is a quieter, more comfortable driving experience for both passenger vehicles and heavy trucks alike.

Beyond ride quality, the project delivers a major upgrade in safety. With improved surface uniformity, enhanced friction, and upgraded striping and delineation, drivers will benefit from clearer lane definition and more predictable driving conditions. These improvements are especially important along the Grapevine’s steep grades and high-speed segments, where consistency and visibility are critical.

Built for the Long Haul

This project is not just about immediate improvements, it’s about long-term performance, durability and reliability. CRCP is engineered to withstand decades of heavy traffic with minimal maintenance. By reducing the need for frequent repairs and patching, the new pavement will help minimize lane closures and construction-related delays in the future.

For a corridor as vital as Interstate 5, one of the primary freight routes on the West Coast, this durability translates directly into economic efficiency and improved mobility.

Commitment to Quality Construction

Rebuilding the Grapevine requires more than just paving. This project incorporates comprehensive roadway reconstruction, including base improvements, grading, and drainage enhancements to ensure the pavement performs as designed for decades to come.

Every element reflects a commitment to quality construction, engineering excellence, and long-term value for California’s transportation system.

A New Driving Experience

When complete, this project will transform the northbound Grapevine from a worn, heavily patched roadway into a modern, smooth, and resilient highway corridor. Drivers can expect a safer journey, improved ride quality, and a roadway built to meet the demands of the future.

This is more than a pavement project, it’s an investment in reliability, safety, and the everyday experience of millions of travelers who rely on Interstate 5.
